Males presented with more severe carpal tunnel syndrome and were offered surgery more often than females with the condition, according to work by researchers at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) featured today in a poster presentation at the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons 2022 Annual Meeting.

The study adds to a growing body of research by HSS investigators examining gender, racial/ethnic and socioeconomic disparities in diagnoses, treatment approaches and outcomes in a range of musculoskeletal conditions, including hip and knee replacement, lupus and rheumatoid arthritis.

A new study by researchers at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) has further clarified the clinical manifestations of undifferentiated connective tissue disease (UCTD). The findings were published as an abstract in the meeting journal of the European Alliance of Associations for Rheumatology (EULAR) 2022 Congress.

Patients in both groups had similar non-criteria manifestations, most commonly joint pain and fatigue. However, patients with UCTD were less likely to have arthritis, criteria-based hematologic manifestations, anti-double stranded DNA or anti-Smith antibodies, and hypocomplementemia. The frequency of RA, Sjögren's, and APS-related serologies did not differ between groups. Compared to those with CTD, UCTD patients were less likely to have ever received systemic corticosteroids.

Young patients undergoing hip surgery who have a shallower hip bone socket are at risk for a repeat operation, according to research presented today at the American Orthopedics Society of Sports Medicine 2022 Annual Meeting.

Femoroacetabular Impingement is a condition in which extra bone grows along one or both bones that form the hip joint -; giving the bones an irregular shape. Because they do not fit together perfectly, the bones rub against each other during movement.

To help orthopedic surgeons better understand radiographic parameters associated with successful primary surgery, Philip A. Serbin, MD, Scottish Rite for Children in Dallas, conducted a prospective study to determine pre-operative radiographic parameters that predict reoperation for FAI and, secondarily, correlate radiographic measures and outcomes in these patients.

Muscular strength and its improvement are important to everyone for their regular day-to-day life activities. Conventionally, muscle function can be assessed by means of physical performance tests and/or muscle strength measurements. However, these methods are not applicable to those who cannot undergo forceful muscle contractions like infants, the elderly, and patients with injuries or cognitive disorders (like dementia).

An easy and popular alternative is using bioelectric impedance analysis (BIA), which can quickly and non-invasively measure tissue resistance (which depends on the amount of water and electrolytes present in the tissue) and reactance (which depends on the integrity of the cell membrane).

Obesity and total joint arthroplasty

The proposition of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) or total hip arthroplasty (THA) for a patient with morbid obesity — an individual with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or greater — requires careful risk and benefit assessment by the orthopedic surgeon and the patient, according an orthopedic surgeon at Mayo Clinic's campus in Rochester, Minnesota.

BMI is independently associated with increased risk of postoperative complications after THA and TKA, says Dr. Bedard. He also indicates obesity usually does not occur in a vacuum, without other health consequences. In fact, it can be a marker of poor overall wellness: Individuals who have a 40-plus BMI tend to be overall less healthy, and often have other medical problems that can increase their risk of complications.

Potential risks and challenges for performing a TKA or THA for a patient with morbid obesity include:
